The POE Tarot by Trisha Leigh Shufelt has been sitting in my collection waiting for its moment. That moment is now.
This is part of my ongoing series where I take a deck and put it through a real reading — not a flip through of pretty cards, but a live spread on real energy. My interpretation goes down first, then we go to the guidebook and see where they align and where they don’t.
For this reading I used a 3-card spread built around what the energy wants you to know right now — Theme, Blocker, and Path Forward. The guidebook offers no spreads so we built our own and let the deck prove itself.

Full Deck Review: The Poe Tarot

Not the deck for a beginner to learn to read the cards but a deck I found intriguing by relating the cards to the writings the passages on the cards came from. The deck is described as whimsical and macabre – missed the latter – which allows for the art. Where Shufelt missed the boat is saying she used traditional tarot archetypes. Should have stuck with following Poe as he served as a companion to The Fool on his journey. I’m still a beginner although in my seventies and I lean toward the darker decks – my favorite being the Otherworldly Tarot by J. Edward Neill – and am a huge fan of Poe which may explain my opting to hold onto the deck. I understand that your comparing this Poe deck to what appears to be a Rider-Waite deck can make it seem unworthy. I also have the Edgar Allan Poe Tarot which I found to be much more traditional.
